Assam is a north eastern state located south of the Eastern Himalayas. The state is blessed with natural beauty and scenic wonders. This is the best tourist destination for nature lovers’, pilgrims, and adventure seekers. The state has a rich culture and heritage. The place is also diverse in its flora and fauna. It has a unique ecosystem. There are numerous river islands and fresh water lakes here. There are many tourist attractions in the state. The most popular and only one hill station of the state is Haflong.

Haflong is the most scenic tourist attrcation of the state. The name was derived from Haflau, Dimasa words,  which means the ‘White Ant Hillock’ while few people believe that it might have been derived from another word Hangklong meaning ‘enriched land’. The hill station is located at an altitude of 680 m above sea level. The town is located at about 84 kms from Silchar and can easily be reached; this makes it a most visited tourist destination of the state. The entire hill station is enveloped in greenery and the landscapes are filled with rolling hills and scenic spots.

 

Haflong lake

 

The beautiful hill station is also known as the ‘Mini Switzerland of Northeast India’. This is the headquarters of the North Cachar District and is around 310 km away from Guwahati, the capital city. The beauty of the Haflong Lake, the orange orchards of Jatinga, and the Hill Railway are the main tourist attractions here. Haflong Lake is the main tourist attraction here. The lake is located in the hill station’s central part. Travellers can enjoy boating. This is one of the largest natural water bodies of the state.

 

Kaziranga National Park

 

Kaziranga National Park is just a few hours drive from Haflong. This is a unique national park housing two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinoceroses.This is a great bird sanctuary also. The Park also inhabits several tigers, wild water buffalo, elephants, and swamp deer. The park is divided by four major rivers, including the Brahmaputra.

 

Haflong Museum also known as the District Museum is another place to visit. There is a large collection of interesting exhibits that speak of the local Dimasa tribe, their history, culture and traditional art.

 

The place is known for its adventure activities like trekking, hiking, gliding and paragliding and also the beauty surrounding the hills and rivers. It is also a host to varieties of unique orchids and rare bird species. There are many important tourist hotspots in and around Haflong Hill. The hill station is inhabited by several ethnic groups, including Dimasas, Hmars, Nagas, Karbis, Khelmas and Mizos, giving it a beauty of diversity.

 

The other main places to visit in the hill station are the Orchid Garden, Borail Range, Maibong and Jatinga. Jatinga is a famous tourist spot and a known bird watchers paradise. This place is famous for the phenomena of bird suicides during the end of the monsoon month. You can also visit Maibong during your trip to Haflong Hill. Maibong is now in ruins, but was once the capital of the Dimasa Kachari kingdom, which existed from mid-sixteenth to mid-eighteenth century. The word ‘Maibong’ means ‘abundance in paddy’ in Dimasa language. The main attraction here is the Mahur River, flowing through the city.

 

You can also purchase many traditional handloom products from the place. Food in Haflong is largely influenced by north east cuisine and is of agrarian nature. The local food is non-spicy, yet tasty.

 

The best time to visit the hill station is from October to April, which is the winter season. Haflong is famous for its lakeside resorts. There are many holiday homes in Haflong offering comfortable budget stay to its visitors with all required amenities.
