Thanjavur was earlier known as Tanjore. The city is considered as ‘the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu’. The city derived its name from Tanjan, a giant who was destroyed by goddess Sri Anandavalli Amman and Lord Vishnu. Thanjavur city reached its max out during the reign of Raja Raja Chola. Thanjavur is home of many classical musicians and Bharatanatyam dancers and is also famous for its unique painting style called Tanjore Painting and Thavil, a drumming instrument. The city houses hundreds of ancient temples district is also known for its exquisite handicrafts, castings, pith craft and South Indian musical instruments.

The Brihadeswara temple at Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu was built by the great ruler of the Chola dynasty, Rajaraja Chola. This temple built during the 10th century AD is a good model of Dravidian temple architecture. The central temple is known as the Periya Koyil. This stands inside a fort and the walls of the fort were built during the 16th century. This is a great living Chola Temple and consists of the garbhagriha, ardhamandapa, mahamandapa and mukhamandapa and is aligned on the east- west axis. This site is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Near the Brihadeswara temple is the Thanjavur Palace, a vast building of masonry built by the Nayaks and the Marathas. The huge buildings with large passages and spacious halls, two palace towers, the armoury and the observation towers can be seen from all parts of the city.

Raja Museum is a museum inside the palace with the best collection of bronzes in the south. There are also a number of stone carvings and sculptures of Bhairava, Umasahita Siva, Kali, Somaskanda and Rama Lakmana group.

Sangeetha Mahal was built by Raja Serfoji a noteworthy example of the engineering skill of its ancient builders.

Saraswathi Mahal is a library having over 30,000 palm leaf and paper manuscripts in Indian and European languages collections.

Schwartz Church was built by Raja Serfoji is located near the palace. This was built as a symbol of affection for the Danish missionary Rev. C.V. Schwartz, who was the Raja's tutor.

Tamil University was established in 1981 and has a great collection of coins and musical instruments.

Sivaganga Gardens is a very beautiful park, located north of the big temple.
