Madurai is a major city of Tamil Nadu. The city is also known as the Athens of the East. This is a place of great historical and cultural importance. It is the oldest city in Tamil Nadu. This is dedicated to Vigneshwara or Vinayaka. It is believed that this tank was created by Tirumala Nayaka. There is an idol of Vigneshwara located in the central part of the Mandapan.

The Sri Meenakshi Temple is one of the most popular temples at Madurai. There are dual shrines in the temple dedicated to Lord Sundareshvara (Shiva) and Meenakshi.

The Thirupparankundram Temple is one of the most famous tourist attractions at Madurai located 8 kms to the south of the city. This is a Pandya built structure during the 8th century.  You can see many images of Hindu deities carved on the walls of the temple. The temple is dedicated to goddess Durga.

The Thirumalai Nayak Palace is another famous place to visit in Madurai. The palace was built by a king Thirumalai Nayak during the 17th century. The two parts of the palace are Rangavilasa and Swargavilasa. Now only the courtyard, Swargavilasa, with a few surrounding structures can be viewed by the tourists.
