1. Kanaka Durga Temple: This is one of the most popular temples in Vijayawada. The temple is located on a hill Indrakeeladri. You can find inscriptions of different dynasties here in the temple. A holy dip in the river Krishna is a must during Dasara.
2. Prakasam Barrage: The barrage is built across the river Krishna. It is 1223.5m long. The barrage serves also as a road bridge and spans over a panoramic lake. The three canals associated with the barrage, run through the city of Vijayawada criss crossing it and giving it a Venetian appearance.
3. Hazrathbal Mosque: In this religious site a holy relic of Prophet Mohammad is kept and is displayed once a year.
4. Undavalli Caves: These caves are carved in 7th century A.D. These are about 8 kms from Vijayawada. These caves were used by the Buddhist monks used as a rest house during the monsoon. The huge monolith of the Lord Buddha in lying posture is a magnificent sight.
5. Gandhi Hill: This is the place where the first Gandhi Memorial in India with seven stupas was constructed. It is located at a height of 500 ft. The main attractions here are a Gandhi Memorial Library, a Sound and Light Show on Mahatma Gandhi’s life and a planetarium.
6. Bhavani Island: The Island is located on Krishna River close to the city. This 133-acre Island is being converted into an attractive tourist spot and a River Front Resort by the State Government. The boat journey to the Island is very pleasant.
7. Mangalagiri: The place is located about 12 kms from Vijayawada. It is here the renowned temple of Lord Narasimha is situated on a hillock. Thousands of devotees are attracted to this unique temple as the mouth of the idol accepts half the quantity of Panakam (jaggery dissolved in water) offered by devotees, irrespective of the size of the vessel.
8. Rajiv Gandhi Park: The Park has an impressive horticultural network. There is also a mini zoo and a musical water fountain inside the Park.
9. Gunadala Matha Shrine: The Church is popularly known as St. Mary’s church and is situated on a hillock on the eastern side of the city.
10. Mogalarajapuram Caves: The caves here are said to be excavated in 5th century A.D. There you can find the idols of Lord Nataraja, Vinayaka & Arthanareeswara carved inside the cave.
11. Hinkar Thirtha: This is the biggest Jain temple in the city. The temple displays great artistic works.
12. Kondapalli Fort: About 16 kms from Vijayawada is Kondapalli village. It is here the Kondapalli Fort built on the 7th century is situated. The fort is located on the hill with an impressive three storeyed rock tower. This is one of the best picnic spots in Vijayawada. The village here is famous for toy making with light-weight wood available on the hill forest. These toys are famous by the name “Kondapalli toys”.
