Cherrapunji is nestled high on the southern fringes of Khasi Hills. The place is also known by the names Sohra and Churra. The natural beauty of the place is enriched with luxurious pine forested hills, spouting white streams and numerous beautiful waterfalls. The place has a refreshing temperate climate. Cherrapunji was once in the first position as the wettest place on Earth in the Guinness Book of World Records. But now, due to the adverse effect of global warming it has been moved to the second place with Mawsynram holding the first place. This is the only place in India to receive rain throughout the year.
The main places to visit in Cherrapunji are:
Seven Sisters Falls: This is the fourth highest waterfalls in India. The Seven Sisters Waterfalls is located just 1 km to the south of Mawsmai village in East Khasi Hills district. This is a seven-segmented waterfall, which plunges over the top of limestone cliffs of the Khasi Hills only during the rainy season.
Living Root Bridges: Meghalaya is famous all over the world for its double-decker and single-decker root bridges. The bridges are made of twisted massive thick roots, which have been intermingled to form a bridge that can hold several people at a time. Khasi people have been trained to grow these bridges across the raised banks of streams to form a solid bridge, made from roots. The roots of the Ficus elastica tree which produces a series of secondary roots form living bridges. These living bridges take ten to fifteen years to become fully functional. Some of the bridges are strong enough to support the weight of fifty or more people at a time. These bridges are alive and still growing and gain strength over time.
Nohkalikai Waterfalls: The waterfall is located about 7 km away from Cherrapunji. It is situated at a height of 1,100 feet. The waterfall is fed by the rainwater which cascades down to a gorge forming a splendid turquoise green pool. This is an adventure lover’s paradise providing great opportunities for trekking, camping, bird watching, landscape photography, swimming and angling for the travelers.
