Agra is a city of Uttar Pradesh located on the banks of the river Yamuna. The city is renowned for the incredible historical monument here Taj Mahal - one of the Seven Wonders of the World.  This was an important capital city to the Mughals during their rule. According to the legends Agra was also mentioned in the Mahabharata, where it was called Agrevana- which meant "The Border of the Forest". It is believed that the city was founded by Raja Badal Singh, a Rajput king.

The main tourist places of interest here are:

Taj Mahal: This is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The famous building is the mausoleum of Shah Jahan's wife, Mumtaz Mahal. This is a world-wide recognized masterpiece of uniformity. The interiors are decorated with semi-precious stones. You can also see the verses of the Quran inscribed on the walls and at the top of the gate there are twenty-two small domes, signifying the number of years took to build the monument.

Agra Red Fort: Agra Red Fort was built during the regime of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. The Fort was once used for military purposes. This is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Agra. The Fort complex is known for its natural beauty with palaces, mosques, audience halls and scenic gardens near the banks of the Yamuna River.

Jama Masjid: The Jama Masjid is also known as the Jami Masjid or "Friday Mosque". The Masjid is located opposite the Agra fort. This is one of the largest mosques in India.

The other places of interest in Agra include Itmad-Ud-Daulah's Tomb, Akbar's Tomb, Sikandra, Mankameshwar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, Rām Bāgh the oldest Mughal Garden in India built by the Emperor Babur.

The city is famous for leather goods, designed carpets, gold and silver jewellery and handicrafts, like zari zardozi, marble and stone carving and inlay work. The city is also known for its popular sweets such as petha and gajak and savory snacks like dalmoth.

Agra is well connected by rail and road transport. The nearest airports to Agra are Jaipur and Delhi. The best time to visit the city is from October to March.
