Hogenakkal is a small hill station of Tamil Nadu by the banks of river Kaveri. This small village is located in the Dharmapuri district of the State. The main attraction of the place is the Hogenakkal Falls. The Kaveri River forks into multiple streams and falls through multiple steps, making the site spellbinding. The falls are the most important place of visit in Hogenakkal. It is sometimes referred to as the "Niagara of India". There are many places where you can sit and view the falls. The water here is believed to have medicinal properties, as the water flows through the numerous herbs that grow in its path.

The place got its name from Hogenakkal, which means 'smoking rocks'. The Carbonatite rocks in this site are considered to be the oldest of its kind in South Asia and one of the oldest in the world. When the water falls on the rocks it appears as if smoke is emerging from the top of the rock because of the force of the water. The place is also known as Marikottayam by the local people.

The nearby must visit place is Melagiri Hills. This is on the Eastern Ghats, at about 47 kms from Hogenakkal. It covers an area of 1295 sq km full of deciduous and semi-evergreen forests. This is the place where, the Western and Eastern Ghats meet. The highest peak here is Gutherayan, located at a height of 1,390 m above mean sea level. This is an excellent place for trekking. The hills also offer wonderful opportunities for bird watching.
