Igatpuri

Igatpuri is a hill station in Nashik district of Maharashtra. The hill station is surrounded by the highest peaks in Sahyaadri. The place is like a paradise for trekkers and hikers. The place is known for Vipassana meditation. One of the largest Vipassana Center, Dhammagiri(the International Centre for Vipassana meditation), is situated here.

The main places to visit in Igatpuri are:

Bhatsa River Valley: The valley is situated at the end of the Thal Ghat, just before entering Igatpuri from Mumbai. It lies in the basin of the majestic Bhatsa River. This is a beautiful scenic spot with lush vegetation.

Arthur Lake: This is a huge and beautiful lake located amidst the dense greenery. This lake is formed by the waters of the Pravara River in the Bhandardara region.

Kalsubai Peak: This is the highest peak of the Western Ghats and is located 35 kms from Igatpuri.

Amruteshwar Temple: The temple was built in 11th century AD and was constructed in a distinct Hemadpanti style. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is surrounded by beautiful green fields and Mount Kalsubai the highest mountain in Maharashtra. From here a further excursion leads to the Ratangad Fort.

Dhamma Giri Meditation Centre: This meditation centre was founded by S.N.Goenka. The centre offers courses in Vipasana (insight meditation) a technique taught by the Buddha in India, 2,500 years ago. A large number of travelers visit this place from all over the world.

Camel Valley: A short distance away from Bhatsa river Valley is the camel valley. On the other side of the valley is a waterfall formed by the rain waters that slops over 1, 000 ft. This waterfall is the main attraction of this place.

Ghatandevi Temple: After crossing the camel Valley, at a small distance is the Ghatandevi temple. It is believed that Ghatandevi is the Protector of Ghats. The mountains of Durrar Utvad, Trimak and Harihar are on the backdrops of the temple. Just behind the temple is the Tringalwadi Fort.

Tringalwadi Fort: The fort is situated at an altitude of 3,000 feet above the sea level. The fort offers picturesque scenery of the whole locality, especially Kulang and Kalsubai mountain ranges. This is a trekkers’ paradise.  Its top is shaped like a Turban. There is a temple dedicated to lord Hanuman nearby.

The Five Waterfalls here is also a famous tourist spot to visit in Igatpuri.
