Palakkad is a district of Kerala. The place is also known as the Gateway of Kerala. This is a land of palm trees and paddy fields. The city is known to be rich in flora and fauna. The abundant forest wealth, dams, wild life sanctuaries, rivers, rare birds and animals, historical monuments, traditional ayurvedic treatment centres makes the place an outstanding destination to visit.

The main tourist attractions here are:

Tipus Fort: The Fort is also known as Palakkad Fort. This was built to enhance communication between Palakkad and Coimbatore. This fort was constructed by Hyder Ali, Tipus father. Now the fort is under the protection of ASI (Archaeological Survey of India). There is an auditorium, a small museum and Children’s park inside the fort.

Jainmedu: This is a Jain temple located 3 km from the city centre on the banks of the Kalpathy river. The temple is around 500 years old. Once Palakkad consisted of 400 Jain families. But now the number is much less but still this temple commands the same respect as before.

Vadakkanthara Temple: The temple is on the way to the Jain Temple in Jainmedu and is dedicated to Bhagavathy.

Manapullikaavu: The temple is about 1200 years old and is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavati. The main festival of the temple is Vela Festival.

Kalpathy Agraharam & Vishwanathaswamy Temple: The temple is about 3 kms from Palakkad and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The annual Chariot festival here is very famous.

KumarapuramTemple: The temple is dedicated to the Lord Prasanna Venkatachalapathy accompanied by his wives, Alamelu and Mangalambal. The rites performed here are similar to the ones carried out at Tirupati Balaji Temple.

Emoor BhagavathyTemple: The temple is located about 8 kms from Palakkad. The deity here is worshipped in three forms - as Sarasawati in the morning, as Lakshmi in the noon and as Durga in the evening. The main festival celebrated here is Navarathri.

Thiruvalathoor Shiva Temple: The temple is situated to the south of Palakkad and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is famous for its stone monuments and wooden work. The main festivals celebrated in the temple are Mahashivarathri and Karthika Poornima.

Malampuzha: The place has a wonderful rose garden with 100 species of roses and a snake park with a large variety of reptiles. You could go for a ropeway ride at a height of 60 feet to view the garden from above, a fancy park with as many as 20 ride options and a KTDC Garden House offering pedal boats, motor boats, row-boats and water scooters for a trip round the reservoir. This is an ideal picnic spot in located about 14 kms from Palakkad.

Silent Valley National Park: The National Park is located on the Kundali Hills of Western Ghats about 65 kms north east of Palakkad. This is the largest National Park in Kerala. The park is home to the largest population of lion-tailed macaques, an endangered species of primate. The tropical evergreen forest here is home to rare flora and fauna, some of which are found nowhere else in the world.

Nellliyampathy: This is a hill station located 54 kms to the south of Palakkad.  is Nellliyampathy, a hill station perched at a height of 4600 feet above sea level. The small town is perfect to soak in the magical beauty of hills, coffee, tea and orange plantations. Moreover, there are also opportunities to explore the dense forests and sight some exotic animals.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary: This Wildlife Sanctuary is located 47 kms from Palakkad. You can get an excellent sight of elephants, gaurs, chitals, sambhars, deer, Nilgiri langurs, wild dogs, leopards and tigers. This park covers an area of 277 sq kms between Anamalai hills and Nellliyampathy. You can have boating in the three dams within the sanctuary.

The best time to visit Palakkad is from September to April. The nearest airport to Palakkad is Coimbatore and the nearest railway station to Palakkad is Pollachi about 60 km away from the city.
