Pondicherry

Pondicherry is the capital of the Union territory, Puducherry. The city is a former French colony which has now become one of the chief tourist destinations of South India. There are many colonial buildings, churches and statues in the city. This is a systematically planned town and hence called the Europe of India. You can see a beautiful mix of Indian and French colonial heritage here. There are a number of tourist destinations in Pondicherry.

The main tourist spots here are:

Sri aurobindo Ashram: This is a main destination for tourist as well as spiritual seekers. You can see several offices, a library, a printing press, art gallery, farms, guest houses, bakery, etc. This is a spiritual community established by Aurobindo Ghosh in 1926.  There is a marble Samadhi in the main building of the ashram, which was the resting place of Sri Aurobindo and Mira Alfassa.

Auroville: This is a township located 8 kms from Pondicherry. The word meaning is ‘The City of Dawn’. This was founded in 1968 by Sri Aurobindo and Mira Alfassa. The township was established with an aim to create a universal town where people from all over the world will live in harmony and peace. Soil from about 124 countries brought here during the inauguration and was placed in a lotus shaped tomb to symbolize the idea behind the establishment of the township. There is a temple in the middle of the town which symbolizes the universal mother and is called ‘Matrimandir’. Now there is a population of 2,007 people in the colony from over 44 different countries.

Promenade Beach: This is a popular tourist spot in Pondicherry. On the way to the beach you can see the famous statue of Arc, the Heritage town hall, Dupleix statue, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the old light house, etc.

Ousteri Wetland & National Park: The place is located at about 10 kms from Pondicherry. The Park covers an area of 3.9 sq.kms. The place welcomes tourists with its natural beauty. There are houseboat services also available here.  The unique species of herbs and trees here also attract a huge number of migratory birds every year.

Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple: This is considered as the oldest Hindu temple in Pondicherry. The temple is dedicated to Sri Varadaraja Perumal, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and is built in Dravidian style of architechture. This is a famous pilgrimage spots in South India.

Botanical Garden: The Botanical Garden is located at the southern entrance of city bus stand. This was opened to the public in 1826.  The Botanical Garden is spread over 22 acres of area with a wide variety of flora. There is a Children’s train, six fountains, a dancing fountain, Japanese rock and an aquarium with ornamental fish.

French War Memorial: The War Memorial was built in 1971 to commemorate the loss of brave French soldiers during the First World War.  This is located on the Goubert Avenue. On every Bastille Day ie; July 14th, the memorial is illuminated and pays homage to the soldiers.

The best time to visit Pondicherry is between November and March. Pondicherry is well connected by rail, road and air.
