Shillong is the capital city of Meghalaya. The highest point here is the Shillong Peak about 6,449 metres high. The city lies in the centre of the Shillong plateau and is surrounded by rolling hills. Shillong is alos known as the “Scotland of the East”. Due to the great passion of the natives of Shillong towards music, the city is also known as ‘India’s Rock Capital’. Elephant Falls: This is a two-tier waterfall situated at about 12 kms on the outskirts of the city. The two waterfalls are the Wir Phang Falls and the Wei Iaplam Falls. The waterfall was named 'Elephant Falls' because a stone near the falls looked like an elephant as it was torn down by an earthquake in 1897.
Shillong Peak: This is the highest point in Meghalaya. From here you can enjoy the eye-catching view of the city and the countryside. The peak is located 5 kms to the south of Shillong.
Butterfly Museum: This is a private property owned by M/s Wankhar, Riatsamthiah. It is the only museum in India which is dedicated to preserving the species of butterflies and moths. The colourful museum has about 1,600 species of butterflies, insects and moths.
Lady Hydari Park: This is a children's themed park which derived its name from the wife of the first Governor of Assam, Lady Hydari. The park incorporates a mini zoo, a deer park, and an open area for children to play. Lady Hydari Park is established and maintained by the Forest Department. There are vast stretches of beautiful rose-beds in the park. The park is designed in a Japanese style. There is a small museum inside the park displaying the rich bio-diversity of Meghalaya including photos of rare species, stuffed leopard, dried skin of python and skulls of elephant.
Umiam Lake: The Lake is also known Barapani or Big Water. This is a best spot in Shillong for adventure activities such as water cycling, kayaking and boating. The lake is also known for its beauty.
Golf Course: This is India's first 18 hole golf course. The Golf Course is located at an altitude of 52000 feet.
Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Culture: The museum has a very vast and impressive collection of tribal artifacts. There is also a gallery on work done by Christian Missionaries in the area.
