Malappuram is a district of Kerala. The word meaning of Malappuram is ‘hilltop’. The city is covered with small beautiful mountains with lush greenery, bonded with several fresh water streams flowing through the city. You can find here some pre-historic relics mainly Rock-cut caves found in Oorakam, Melmuri, Ponmala, Vengara, etc.

The main pilgrimage centers in Malappuram are:

Kadampuzha: The famous Bhagavathi temple set up by Sree Sankaracharya is located here. The place is in Melmuri village of Tirur taluk.

Angadipuram: The place is located 1.5 kms to the west of Perinthalmanna. There are two famous temples here namely Thirumandhamkunnu & Tali.

Thirunavaya: The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located on the banks of Bharathapuzha. This place is the venue of Mamankam, an enactment of traditional martial arts by suicide squades.

The other pilgrimage centres here are Trikandiyur Shiva temple, Mumburam Muslim Shrine, Valiya Juma Masjid, and Pazhayangadi Mosque in Kondotti.

Kottakunnu: There is an old fort at the base of the cantonment Hill. There are two famous temples the Vettakkorumakan Temple and the Siva temple near to the fort with famous Malabar murals. There is a beautiful helipad also at Kottakunnu.

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary: The Bird Sanctuary is located 19 kms from Kozhikode city centre. The Sanctuary hill is about 200m above sea level. This is really an earthly paradise for migratory birds. The bird sanctuary here is spread over an area of 3 Kms in a scenic area surrounded by hillocks. Over a hundred varieties of native birds and over 60 varieties of migrating birds flock here from Siberia, Persian Gulf, Europe, America and Himalayan ranges in large numbers. You could also get a scenic view of the Kadalundippuzha and the sea.

Nilambur: The place is about 40 kms from Malappuram. This place is popular for its teak plantations and is also a trading centre of hill products. There is a well-designed teak museum also.

Adyanpara: This is another scenic spot in Malappuram famous for its waterfalls and magnificent wooded forests.

Kodikuthimala: This is a beautiful hilltop near Perinthalmanna famous for the panoramic views it offers.

Kottakkal: This is a small town located about 13 Kms from Malappuram. The famous Ayurveda Hospital, Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala is located here. There is an Ayurveda research center, a nursing home, a hospital, an Ayurveda college and a medicinal herbal garden for this Hopsital. People from different parts of the world come here for Ayurveda treatment. The town is also known for its art and culture. The Venkata Theva temple popular for natural paintings here is also a must visit place. The Pooram festival here is also very famous which attracts thousands.

Nedumkayam: The place is located about 18 Kms from Nilambur. There is a wooden rest house built by the British here. From here you can get good view of the rain forest, elephants and other wild animals also. There is an elephant-taming center also.

The best season to visit Malappuram is during the months of September to March. Malappuram is well connected by road, rail and air transport.
