McLeod Ganj

McLeod Ganj is a village in the suburbs of Dharamshala in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. The place is also known as "Little Lhasa" or "Dhasa" because of its large population of Tibetans. The village is predominantly inhabited by a hill tribe, the Gaddis. The place got its name after Lord David McLeod, the English lieutenant governor of Punjab, who is believed to find the village in 1848. McLeod Ganj comes under the circuit of Dhauladhar Range.

The main tourist spots in McLeod Ganj are:

  1. Tsug la Khang (Dalai Lama’s Temple): This is the main spot to visit in McLeod Ganj. Here there is a Namgyal Monastery and shrine rooms. There is a huge statue of the Buddha in the shrine, along with two smaller statues of Chenresig and Guru Rinpoche. Parts of the statues here were brought from Tibet. The residence and administrative offices of Dalai Lama are near the monastery.
  2. Masroor Temple: The temple is believed to have been built by the Pandava brothers. There is a group of 15 monolithic rock-cut temples. The main temple consists of the idols of Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita. There are also carvings of Buddha in the temple. This temple is at the top of a hill.
  3. Dal Lake: Dal Lake is a small lake near the beautiful village “Tota Rani” surrounded by deodar trees. There is a small Shiva mandir on the bank of the lake. The place is considered as a sacred spot.
  4. Triund: This is a 9000-foot ridge behind the Dhauladhar range. Triund is a popular trekking spot in McLeod Ganj.
  5. St John’s Church in the Wilderness: This small church is dedicated to John the Baptist and was built in 1852. The church is situated about 2 kms from McLeod Ganj in a deodar grove, and there is a small graveyard on the grounds. It is here in this church, the final resting place of Lord Elgin, who was the Governor General and Viceroy of India in 1861 during the British rule.
