    Kangra is a district of Himachal Pradesh. This is one of the most picturesque valleys of the State. The ancient name of the place was 'Trigarta'.  It is covered by massive Dhauladhar range of mountains. The place is rich in culture and history. It is surrounded by the Dhauladhar mountain range. The famous 'Bajeshwari Devi' temple is located in the town. Kangra was revaged by foriegn aggression a number of times. The town is famous for temples, forts and is also an emerging business centre.

    The temples here i.e. Baijnath, Jawalamukhi, Bajreshwari Devi Temple, Chamunda Devi Temple, Masroor Rock Temple, Chinmaya Tapovan, Kathgarh Temple and Trilokpur Temple are famous throughout the world. The famous Maharana Pratap Sagar Lake (once known as Pong Dam) is situated here which offers a number of water sports activities such as boating, angling and fishing, bird watching etc. It is also a wild life sanctuary. The popular toursit areas like Dharamsala and Palampur are also located in this district. Dharamshala is a heaven for tourists and Palampur offers beautiful scenic views of Dhauladhar and also thrilling experience of paragliding.

    The main tourist attractions here are:

    Maharan Pratap Sagar Lake: This is one of the main tourist spots in Kangra. This is a wildlife sanctuary   and over 220 species of birds belonging to 54 families have been sighted here. The land portion of the sanctuary has barking deer, sambar, wild boars, nilgai, and leopards. 27 species and sub-species of fish belonging to six families have been also recorded in the lake.

    Chamunda Devi Temple: The temple is located about 15 kms from Kangra and is dedicated to goddess Chamunda. The cave region on the back of the temple there is a stone 'Lingam' under a boulder representing Lord Shiva.

    Jwalamukhi: The place is located 30 kms from Kangra. This place is famous for Jwalamukhi, the 'Flamming Goddess'. There is no idol and the flame here is considered a manifestation of the Goddess. The eternal flame issues from the rock sanctum and is constantly fed by the priests.

    Masroor Rock Temple: The place is known for its monolithic temples and is located about 40 kms from Kangra. There are 15 monolithic rock-cut temples built in Indo-Aryan style. The main shrine contains three stone images of Ram, Lakshman and Sita.

    Kangra Fort: This historic fort was built by Bhuma Chand. The fort is located on the bank of the river Banganga at the height of 350 feet. In the foreyard of the fort are the temple of 'Laxmi Narayan' and 'Adinath' located in the Kangra fort is dedicated to Jainism. There are two ponds inside the fort one of them is called 'Kapur Sagar'. At present the fort is under the control of 'Archaeological Survey of India'.

    Sujanpur Tira: This is a historic town known for its palace, which is now in ruins, built by Raja Sansar Chand. The famous temples here are Gauri Shankar, Murli Manohar and Narbadeshwar. This is the largest ground of Himachal Pradesh which is used as meeting place and also for sports activities.

    Trilokpur: This is a natural cave with attractive pillars of limestone on the floor of the cave by the fissure of water from the roof. It is about 41 kms from Kangra. This cave is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

    The best time to visit Kangra is between March and June. The nearest airport to Kangra is Gaggal airport located 13 kms from Kangra and the nearest railway station is Pathankot located about 90 kms from the city.
