    Visakhapatnam is popularly referred to as Vizag. It is the largest city of Andhra Pradesh. This is a port city located along the shores of Bay of Bengal. This is the headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy. The place is blessed with rich culture & heritage. The Venkateswara Konda houses he Venkateswara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, Ross Hill houses the Church of Virgin Mary and the Dargah Konda houses the tomb of a Muslim Saint and is called Baba Ishaq Madina.

    The main tourist attractions to visit here are Araku Valley, Haritha Mayuri, Borra Caves, Kailasagiri Hill, Ramakrishna Beach, Submarine Museum, Dolphine’s Nose & Port, Tyda, Rushikonda, Lawson’s Bay, Simhachalam, etc.

    The nearby tourist attractions of Vizag include:

    Pavurallakonda: This is a hillock west of Bhimli located about 24 kms from Visakhapatnam. The place is also known as ‘Pigeon Hill’. There are 16 rock-cut boxes on the top of the hill for collecting rain water. Near to the hill is Gopalapatnam on the Tandava river. This village is surrounded by brick stupas, viharas, pottery and other Buddhist artefacts.

    Sankaram: This is a 2000 years old Buddhist site situated about 40 kms to the south of Visakhapatnam. The site is known for its monolithic stupas, rock-cut caves & brick structures. Historic pottery and Satavahana coins have also been excavated from this place. Bojjannakonda is another Buddhist site near to Sankaram. Here you can see a number of images of the Buddha carved on the rock face of the caves.

    Bavikonda: This is an important Buddhist heritage site located about 15 kms from Visakhapatnam. Here you can find the remains of an entire Buddhist complex, comprising 26 structures belonging to three phases. Here you can find a piece of bone stored in a large container believed to belong to the mortal remains of the Buddha.  The Telugu meaning of the word ‘Bavikonda’ is ‘a hill of Wells’.  Here in this hill you can find a number of wells for the collection of rain water. Roman and Satavahana coins and pottery dating from the 3rd century BC to the 2nd century AD had also been recovered from here.

    Thotlakonda: This is a Buddhist Complex situated on top of a hill about 16 kms from the city. This is a protected site by the state government. The place covers an area of 120 acres. Excavations have revealed religious, secular and civil structural remains from here.

    The best time to visit the city is the winter season. Vizag is well connected by rail, road and air transport.
