Idukki DTPC to tap village tourism potential

The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) will tap the potential of village tourism making Cheruthoni as a hub in addition to the Malankara Dam as a circuit station for reservoir-based tourism.
The Idukki Park in front of the Idukki arch dam and the Hill View Park which provides a panoramic view of Idukki dam will be the focal point in the new venture in which less known places will be clubbed together in a tour package. These two places are already having the basic infrastructure and the other places will be developed without harming the natural environment.
The DTPC has 106 acres of land in the dam area, where a rock garden will also be set up.
The main places to be clubbed together in the project are Palkulamedu, Pandipara, Pushpagiri, Meenuliyanpara, Anjuruli, Umikuppamala, Kattadipara and Kalyanathandu. Some of these places are under the Forest Department and the Hydel Tourism Department and in some areas where the land belongs to the private parties, it would either be taken on rent or on a sharing basis.
It has been noted that village tourism and trekking are important activities in the itinerary of both domestic and foreign tourists.
By developing the potential of village tourism, the DTPC hopes to relieve the pressure being experienced in Munnar and Thekkady during the peak season.
The DTPC has already launched daily village tour packages from Munnar.
The main places in the reservoir-based tourism circuit are Thommankuthu waterfall, Uppukunnu View Point, Keezharkuthu, Thumpichimala, Kanjar, Mylakombu Church and Uravappara temple.
There are a considerable number of tourists visiting Cheruthoni after the Idukki dam was opened for visitors on Sundays and Saturdays in addition to the festival seasons.
