Holidays in Agra, the City of Love

Agra is an ancient city of Uttar Pradesh situated on the banks of the river Yamuna.  The city reached its full fame during the reign of Mughals. Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World is in Agra. I along with my family had a 4 days trip to Agra. It took 3 hours by road to reach Agra from Delhi. We stayed at Garden Villa Homestay. I really loved the hospitality of the people there. The main tourist places we visited in Agra include: [caption id="attachment_1044" align="alignnone" width="300"]taj Taj Mahal[/caption] Taj Mahal: This beautiful marble structure was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Taj Mahal is a speechless attraction of Agra. The beauty of the monument is beyond words. Agra Red Fort: It is a UNESCO World heritage site located at about 2 kms from Taj Mahal. Inside the grand fort there is Shahjahan's palace, Diwan-e-Aam, Diwan-e-Khaas, nagina masjid etc. The artworks and the carvings in the fort are very beautiful. Jama Masjid: This is one of the largest mosques in India situated opposite to Agra Fort. This was built by Shah Jahan. Fatehpur Sikri: This is a city in Agra constructed by Mughal Emperor Akbar. This is also a World Heritage Site. We were able to see Diwan I Khas, Diwane Aam, private quarters of the Mughals, and lovely stone carvings. Buland Darwaza: This is a grand gateway in Fatehpur Sikri built by Akbar. Buland Darwaza is also known as the 'Gate of Magnificence'. There is a tomb of Salim Chisti and a visit to the tomb is a must for the travelers. Panch Mahal: Inside the Fatehpur Sikri Fort Complex is the Panch Mahal. This was the palace of Akbar and Jodhabai. This is a perfect worth seeing Mahal. Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary: I really enjoyed there. We could see different species of birds there and also got a chance to boat through the Sanctuary. There are many more tourist places at Agra worth visiting. It is better to hire a guide to know more about the history of Agra. We enjoyed Agra’s Mughali food as well creamy, strong flavored curries, lots of ground and whole spices, dried fruits and nuts, roasted meats, etc. My trip to Agra was quite memorable. Agra is the best place for a family trip.
