The rich, diverse and distinctive cuisine of Malabar attracts native food lovers as well as tourists from all parts visiting Kerala. The recipes are handed down from generations who were influenced by the multiple cultures that the place has seen. The Arabs, the European traders and the native Brahmins have greatly influenced the Malabar cuisines. All of them have their own contribution which made Malabar cuisines a colorful mixture of various cuisines. Malabari’s adapted the flavours, styles and delicious techniques of all different cultures and created their own cuisine which stands out for its appetizing taste and variety.

There are a lot of vegetarian as well as a wide variety of non-vegetarian options, particularly with poultry, mutton, and lamb which has the uniqueness of Malabar. There are also wide varieties of rice preparations, rice breads, and flatbreads in Malabar. The place also has its own style in snacks. They have plenty traditional snack options. The extreme north of Malabar has a lot of Konkani influence. The recipes there are more on seafood. You can have many delicious sea foods from the restaurants near the beaches of Malabar as the region is blessed with large availability of Fresh Prawns, Shrimp, Crab, Mussels etc. Some of the beach resorts also serve European Cuisines. One of the main restaurants in Calicut is Paragon Restaurant; the menu here is vast with lots of fish, chicken, and veg Malabari dishes. Another restaurant is Hotel Sagar serving both veg and non-veg yummy Malabari biriyani’s. The other one is the Dawn Restaurant; this is a multicuisine restaurant serving malabari cuisines in Calicut. The next place I would like to mention is Thalassery. This place is a commercial town in Kannur. Kannur is famous for its varied Malabari dishes. The speciality of Thalassery in food is Thalassery biriyani or Malabar biriyani. This is a very popular dish in Malabar cuisines. This dish is suggestive of the Mughal influence in the past. This is a rice-based dish blended with spices and chicken, variations can be made by using mutton, fish, eggs or vegetables. Some of the popular restaurants in Thalassery are; Rara Evis Restaurant, Paris Restaurant, Green Leaf Restaurant, The Pearlview Regency, Star Restaurant City Centre, Olive Garden Restaurant, & Park View Restaurant.
