Munnar, Wayanad, Athirapally Falls, & Kumarakom are the four main must visit mid-monsoon holiday destinations in Kerala. You can enjoy very well the verdant greenery and vibrant culture of the state during the monsoons.

Munnar

Munnar is a breathtakingly beautiful hillstation on the Western Ghats, a range of mountains in the Idukki district of Kerala. The name Munnar means, 'Three Rivers'. The place got its name as the three rivers Madhurapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly meet there. This was the favored summer resort of the erstwhile British rulers in the colonial days. The town is also known as the ‘Kashmir of South India’ for its lush green valleys, aromatic tea & spice plantations, majestic waterfalls and beautiful silver oak trees. The best season to visit Munnar is from August to May, peak season will also see hike in holiday rental accommodation rates. Wayanad

Wayanad is the north east district and a prime monsoon tourist destination in Kerala. The name 'Wayanad' is derived from the term Vayal Nadu, where Vayal means Paddy fields and Nadu the land. The mist clad mountains, intense forests and fertile green plantations makes the place explicitly beautiful. The place shelters endangered species as it has an amazing range of flora and fauna. The place enjoys a pleasant climate the whole year.There are many indigeneous tribals in this area. Wayanad experiences good rains during monsoon. Monsoon in Wayanad makes it good place to visit in august in India. Even some parts receive one of the highest rains in India. Rains, rocks, greenery of plantations, cool wind, adventures activities like trekking through a rainforest area are the main attractions one can experience here in August.  

Athirapally Falls

Athirapally Waterfalls is also known as ‘The Niagara of Kerala’. The waterfalls is situated in Athirappilly panchayath, Chalakudy Taluk in of Thrissur district. The beauty of the waterfalls is a must watch sight in late July/early August. This is the largest waterfall in Kerala and joins the Chalakudy river deep in the Vazhachal forests of the Western Ghats. This waterfall, looks just like 'Niagara falls' during its peak flow. There are great trekking trails both to the top and to the bottom of the waterfall. Each of these trekking trails takes about 10 minutes one way. Travellers can explore and enjoy great shots of the waterfalls by going downstream. The place is located about 80 kms from Kochi.

Kumarakom

Kumarakom is a village about 16 km away from Kottayam town in Kerala. This is a famous backwater hub in Kerala. Kumarakom is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake. The Lake with its beautiful streams, canal and distributaries add to the beauty of Kumarakom. This village is a part of Kuttanad region. The main tourist attraction here is the bird sanctuary. The bird sanctuary covers an area of about 14 acres. The largest freshwater lake in the state, Vembanad Lake, makes it a beautiful holiday place to visit in August in India during the abundant rains. The rains also make bird-watching at Kumarakom an absolute wonder for visitors.

This is a favourate place for migratory birds and the place is considered as bird watcher's paradise. Some of the bird species found here are darters, herons, teals, waterfowls, cuckoo, wild duck and egrets. Migratory birds such as the Siberian Stork also visit here in flocks. The main attraction in the bird sanctuary is a two-hour rowing canoe trip. The place has a wide variety of flora and fauna and is popularly known for its backwater tourism. Kumarakom experiences moderate climates all year long. Houseboat or traditional Kettuvallom trips are the best preferred holiday recreation here. You can also enjoy fishing here. The natural beauty of the place attracts tourists from all parts. You must book in advance rooms before your visit.
