Gujarat is one of the most popular tourist destinations of India. This is the 6th largest state of the country. The State offers scenic natural beauty from Great Rann of Kutch to the hills of Saputara. The place also referred as the ‘Jewel of the West’ has a lot to offer to its visitors. This is the one and only place where you can see pure Asiatic lions in the world. The best hill station of the state is Saputara.

Saputara is the only hill station of the State. The hill station is located at an elevation of about 1,000 m above sea level. This is in the Dang district of the State. The place is nestled in the Sahyadri range of hills. The word ‘Saputara’ literally means ‘Abode of the Serpents’. This town got its name from the snake god worshiped by the tribals on the banks of the river Sarpagana.

 

The main attraction here is the Saputara Lake. The lake is surrounded by lush greenery and is the best place for boating. The thick forest around Saputara is dotted with tribal villages. You can even go trekking down to these nearby villages. The hill station is best known for its wildlife tours. It is rich with wildlife resources and scenic tourist places such as Botanical Garden, Gira Falls, Mahal Forest, Unnai Mata Temple and Hot Springs, Jambalaya, Girmal Falls, Dangs Darbar, Hatgadh Fort, and Saptashringi Devi Mandir.

 

The Gira waterfall is a 30 m natural drop into the Ambica River.  The waterfall is located at about 52 kms from Saputara. The best season time to visit here is during the months of June to November. Adventure sports such as paragliding, parasailing and rock climbing are also popular.

 

From the artists' village, you can buy tribal artifacts and craft items such as wood carvings, stuffed birds etc. You can find here Warli paintings, a traditional tribal style of paintings done in white on an ochre background.

 

The best time to visit Saputara is from the middle of the March to the November. Saputara enjoys a favorable climate all year round and has several attractions like boating in the lakes, ropeways, waterfalls and marvelous views of the entire valley.

 

The main places to visit here are Artists Village, Boating Club, Echo Point, Forest Nursery, and forest log huts, Hatgadh Fort, Honey Bees Centre, Lake View Garden, Museum, Nageshwar Temple, and Purna Sanctuary.

 

From the hill station you can visit the Purna Wildlife Sanctuary in the Mahal Bardipura forest, at about 60 kms away. To visit the sanctuary, you need prior permission. The forest offers excellent walking and trekking options. There are camping facilities and tented accommodations within the sanctuaries.

 

Sunrise Point is another must visit place which offers an eye-catching view of the hill station. To reach there, you have to opt a ten-minute ropeway ride across the valley. It gives a breathtaking view of the Dang Forest and also the nearby villages.

 

This is a well planned hill station having many holiday homes such as resorts, and cottages, boating parks, swimming pools, club, ropeways, theatres and museum. There are various restaurants in Saputara that offer Gujarati, Punjabi and Chinese dishes. The Museum here gives an idea about the culture of the local people and their lifestyle.The nearest railway station is Waghai and the nearest airport is at Surat.
